Mine appears to be made to insert after tile is complete.... the instructions say to caulk behind edge and then finished edge sits on outside.

Q: Can you apply tile or stone as a finish?

I would not recommend that. If yoiu need one you can tile use Shcluter Recessed Soap Box

Q: What is the width of the unit (width the hole would be cut)?

Overall Height: 36" (from top to bottom), Overall Depth: 4" (back most to outer most edge on shelf), Overall Width: 8" (from left to right). The wall opening height needs to be 34.625" and the opening width needs to be 6.625".
