How to repair your band instrument!
A good book for anyone wanting to do work on an instrument. Replace pads on a woodwind instrument, Take out dents on your brass bell. It there in this book. You may want to invest in some specialty tools to do the work properly. That's up to you. I am a brass instructor and have used the book to solve some problems. Highly recommended. It got here on time and was priced good. Thanks Amazon

Too much emphasis on woodwinds
The 154-page book has some good points, but its heavy emphasis on woodwinds severely limits its usefulness for brass instructors like me. It covers stuck mouthpieces and slides, and has some interesting things to say about soldering and minor repairs to trombone slides. But I was expecting more. There was little said about emergency repairs for broken braces - just advice about how to solder them back (when you get time!) or take to a repair shop. I use plastic coated twist ties available in most hardware shops as a temporary solution. The writer suggests using muriatic acid (actually diluted hydrochloric acid) to remove hardened deposits on the inside of brass mouthpieces that brushes cannot remove. While this is certainly a quick and effective solution, muriatic acid is also very dangerous to use, particularly in inexperienced hands. He completely misses the chance to tell readers that you can get the same effect far more cheaply and safely if you immerse the mouthpiece in white vinegar for a few hours. No mention of the need to avoid rubber bands when making emergency repairs on water keys (the rubber reacts with the saliva to produce an acid). The pictures - although extensive - were badly printed in the copy I got (I ordered and received a new copy), This severely limited their usefulness.Overall, this book is probably far more useful for woodwind than brass instructors.

Buying after borrowing
I'm buying a copy of this book after returning the library copy. The writing is clear and easy to understand. Common problems (example: middle valve sticking on a trumpet) are identified and covered, simplifying diagnosis.

very happy!
I am a music teacher, and I find myself referring to this book quite often! it has helped keep quite a few instruments out of the repair shop, which keeps my students parents, and my budget, very happy!

Kinda outdated
Not real user friendly. I would probably not have bought it if I had known. Looks like the pages were done on a cheap copy machine. Not happy with the product really.
