Spacious, high quality, lightweight tarp!
This is a large tarp, very close to 10x10 feet. It weighs just under 2 pounds without the included stuff sack which for the size it pretty lightweight, comparable to a Kelty Noah's Tarp.I used this tarp on a 7 day bike tour from Pittsburgh PA, to Washington DC on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal. I used the tarp four of the six nights and it provided a great shelter. I pitched the tarp in what I can only find called a “C-Fly Wedge” configuration. This provides ground coverage as well as good rain protection with some of the tarp under your body and the rest over you in a lean-to style shelter. Most of the trip the weather was on the verge of raining with very high humidity. I used a hammock as a bug tent under the tarp and the combination allowed me to avoid condensation build up like a normal two wall tent would experience (other riders had wet tents all week). The tarp rolled up small enough that even when I couldn't get it totally dry before leaving camp I was able to leave it out of my panniers lashed to my rear seatbag rack (orange guyline wrapped around it behind my saddle in one photo). The last night of the trip we were caught in a downpour all night, I had zero water get into the shelter or through the tarp, I slept completely dry.I found it difficult to get the tarp to pitch tautly having only the supplied guy lines to use. This is my fault as I should have brought a more significant piece of paracord to use for the ridgeline as I knew I wouldn't be using poles to pitch it. The weight of the tarp caused the guy line ridgeline to sag which made getting the corner guy lines and middle of the tarp taught nearly impossible. This would not have been an an issue if I was using a pitch that allowed for the use of the grommets but the “C-Fly Wedge” requires the ridgeline to be in a non-standard position as you can see in my photos. I may add grommets in that position as I liked the pitch. I could have even used a stone with the tarp wrapped around it and tied off to the guyline.I'm very happy with the tarp for it's versatility and value for the money!
