This is Invaluable for checking lines and circuits, easy to use with accurate results. Good clear instructions lightweight and has clarity in its tone generation. I have been able to fine a short on my cars airbag system using this. So I am well happy

Used it to trace some cables through a loft - worked perfectly.With the little clamp box turned on, you can "hear" it in tone-detection mode from a good 2 feet away through open air. Obviously it traces just as well when you have it clamped to an actual cable.The box is a bit odd in that it has a toggle switch which is 3-way and shielded - at first it looks like a coax cable, but it's a toggle switch inside a protective circular metal sheath. I suppose it's to stop you accidentally turning it off or similar? It's the on/off switch for the tone generator box, and lets you switch between tone generation and continuity testing.But worked really well, strong signal, easy to use and adjustable.

Just received this installed Batterys but tone generator is dead, have double checked the Batterys but unit fails to operate. I will be returning this asap

It comes in a really nice tough fabric case which holds the transmitter, receiver, and wiring. It also comes complete with two 9V batteries to set it working right away, which is great.The English instructions are rather sketchy, as they often are with these things, but the internet always fills in the gaps, if you're unsure (I was!)It's a little unclear whether this tester is for use on voltage-loaded or voltage-free cables, but since neither the packaging or the literature inside makes any reference to a multimeter category rating, I'm guessing voltage-free, to be on the safe side?? It would be good to clear that up, though.The great thing about this meter is that it can actually detect breaks not just up close, but also under plaster/behind MDF etc.I haven't had a chance to use this yet, just do a few tests, but if you do a lot of electrical work this feels like a good solid piece of kit, worth it's spot in any toolbox.

This cable tester is a bag of mixed messages. It appears to have been designed with telephone engineers in mind, as it has a plug to fit (and instruction on how to use) a Linesman Handset - but then the thing is made of flimsy plastic, and would never survive living in the bottom of a Linesman's toolbag.The silver tube that pokes out of the top is NOT a coax socket, but actually the on/off switch! And to change between tones you will need a cocktail stick to move the switch on the back of the tone generator.It does come with two PP3 batteries, which is nice. You will need a crosshead screwdriver to put the battery in the tone generator, and a flathead to put the battery in the "Ballery Compertment" of the 'wand' - although, be careful as removing this screw will cause a nut to fall out of the back of the handset (and roll across the floor).Well. The tone generator generates tones; and the wand detects the tones - so I guess it works.But it is cheap, poorly designed, and (at £41) very expensive for what it is.I want to give this 2*, but despite its faults, it DOES work - so 3*

I spend a lot of times trying to trace cables which can disappaear in all directions (note these are Cat 5, Cat5e and Cat6 network cables rather than electrical cables) and are not labelled correctly in a patch panel.I've got a couple of tools for verifying the integrity of a know cable, but nothing to trace an unknown one and this fits the bill perfectly for me.Carrying case means its simple to transport around or store in a toolbox and it's very effective (although put the volume low and increase as necessary rather than turn up to full as it's quite load).Overall really happy with it, especially at the pricing point of £40.99 at the time of review.
