Really nice 3D scanner
This scanner is pretty easy to use for a fairly inexperienced user. The hardware appears well made and like it will last a long time. The form factor makes it easy to use for handheld scans, but for consistency and accuracy I'd recommend the turntable included in the premium and luxury kits. I love that the software works with Macs as well as PCs as another scanner I ordered wouldn't work with my Mac. Importantly, the Mac software supports older Intel Macs as well as M1/M2 Apple silicon machines. The kit includes everything needed to start scanning and comes in a convenient carrying case so you can take it with you and scan things on the go. I also appreciate that it's safe to use even for facial scanning. That means you don't have to worry about being exposed to any dangerous radiation or anything while scanning biological organisms including humans. The scanning works at distances between about 6" and 16" so you do need to be quite close to the object being scanned. For small scale items this is rarely an issue though.Overall I like this scanner a lot and would recommend it to anyone looking for an easy to use small scale scanner that works with both Macs and PCs.

works decent once you know how to use it
For something this expensive, it should be pretty user friendly and easy, but I found myself constantly looking up info for how to do something, or why isn't this doing what I want, etc. Granted there is some learning curve to stuff like this, but I feel like for the price, it should be a much more streamlined process and easier to obtain faster results.

Great for small objects
Upon unboxing the Mole 3D Scanner, the initial impression is notably positive. The scanner, along with its rotating table and cables, is meticulously organized within a dedicated softshell case. However, the additional accessories such as the tripod, extra cables, and the light box are not accompanied by individual cases. Typically, these items are set up once and remain stationary for fixed scanning operations so not case for them is ok.The software must be downloaded from the website so ensure you have internet access on the computer which will be used for scanning. The software is called JMStudio and all scanning must be done through the software. I have not attempted other softwares such as Skanect or similar.Navigating through the software can be tricky as it is laid out a bit awkward. As a new user, you want to focus on the top three modes which are Easy Scan, Table Scan, and Edit Mode. The user will begin with either Easy Scan (handheld) or Table Scan (fixed with rotating platform). Once your scans are complete, the Edit Mode is used to view scans, stitch scans together, simplify scans, and export scan data.My experience with Easy Mode has been less than satisfactory. While attempting to scan a Nanuk 920 plastic case lid, the scanner frequently lost track of edges, leading to errors. Attempts to enhance tracking, such as placing the rotating platform disc atop the case lid, yielded limited improvement. Perhaps using 3D scanning point markers could resolve issues encountered with larger, feature-sparse models but it's evident that scanning larger items with minimal distinct features likely requires additional markers for optimal tracking.Table Scan has been relatively successful for my uses. In this mode, the user must first scan the rotating platform which is provided with the scanner as that is the scanners reference, then you scan the model on the rotating platform. Attempting to scan an automotive trim piece was successful. I usually make 4 scans of the item; each time oriented a different way to enable to scanner to pickup all the features.Once scanning is complete, the software’s Edit Mode allows you to stitch the scans together automatically or manually. Manual stitch has netted the best results but you can only edit points for 2 scans at a time, so for 4 scans, you’ll need to stitch 3 or 4 times for all the scan data to be stitched correctly. Once completed, the software can export the scan data to an .OBJ file, after which it is best to migrate to MeshMixer or other software to continue weeding out the junk points and save only what you need.Is it possible to go from a scan directly to a 3D print? Yes and No. The user could allow the JMStudio to handle making the model solid and cleaning up the scan data but in my experience, MeshMixer allows for more flexibility but definitely adds complexity and has a decently steep learning curve.TL;DR: This scanner is ideal for smaller scans (about 6”x6”x6”) and my best results were had with the rotating platform. Handheld scanning has been tricky and usually does not turn out as expected. Handheld scanning theoretically can be performed better but the included accessories do not enable that (i.e. reference stickers).

Excellent
This is the first 3d scanner I've ever used so I have no frame of reference, but I'm pretty damned impressed so far.The scanner comes very well packed in a hard case that has space for accessories. The scanner is separated from everything else in the case to avoid damage. Everything from the scanner to the smallest cable feels high quality and solid, so I've no doubt this thing will survive many years of use. There's a bit of a learning curve, especially as a first time user, but in general the scanner is pretty much plug and play once you have the software installed. It's fairly intuitive, so I didn't find myself buried in the manual for hours before my first scan.I've been playing around for a couple of days, and so far I've made very good scans of a flashlight and a vape pen with the turntable, and I also recorded my wife's face in handheld mode. All of them turned out really well and recorded fine details pretty clearly.I've no idea how this scanner stacks up against others. I know the prices vary wildly for these 3D scanners, so I couldn't tell you the difference between a $300 model and this one at $800+, but I'm impressed.

Can't get it to work properly.
I'm quite disappointed in this device considering the price and reputation of this brand of 3D scanners. I watched numerous tutorials and videos on how to use it and I still can't get a complete scan of anything. I end up with only 1/2 a scan, or a figurine with 4 arms and 4 legs that won't line up. I sent in a video of what I was experiencing to the JM Studio support and their suggestion was to change the USB Interface. I've changed it 3 times, still with the same results. Even if the scanner and object are perfectly still, the scanner image jumps around and loses the tracking of the scan, so it's frustrating when it won't even track an object that is not even moving. The scanning difficulties aside, I do like the software interface, its super easy to work with and quite intuitive, but I do suggest watching a tutorial or two before beginning, especially if you're a first timer. The kit comes with so much: tri-pod and hardware to allow for portable scanning, turn table, light box. Everything you need (except the portable power device if you're going to take it outside.) I love everything about it, except the fact that I can't get a good scan. I'm still a novice trying to make this work and I'm not going to give up, but at this time, I can't give it a high rating.
