Basic gigabit media converter that doesn't break the bank

Turns out, the fibre itself is stupid cheap these days. Particularly OS2. I was quite shocked to find out that it's cheaper than Cat 5e. Copper price and everything. What's great about OS2 and not so great about OM(whatever) is that a single strand of fibre can do duplex. Pretty much like any full fibre ISP, albeit without the passive element.I'm also quite unfortunate that the only decent way of routing my networking is underneath my kitchen furniture. By itself isn't a problem until that realisation that high power appliances, such as an oven or an electric hob may pose some challenges to the feeble ethernet that's prone to inductive currents. While shielding and grounding is a thing, there are limits to how close one can safely get next to a high voltage line. That's great about light: it doesn't really care about EM interference. You can't induct a current in a plastic core in a fibre. Add a couple of duplex SFP receivers (they can be found pretty cheap elsewhere). These BiDi receivers use 1310/1550nm light for RX/TX and they are sold in A/B pairs as the TX wavelength one one side is the RX on the other and viceversa.Cue this media converter on one side and Ubiquiti equipment on the other. It works as expected with ONTi transceivers and devices such as UDM Pro or ER-X SFP. Essentially, this enabled me to use fibre as my home core networking. The beauty about OS2 is that I only need to upgrade the transceivers to suport SFP+ if I ever need something like 10 gigabit or more. For the time being, benefitting from the economies at scale for fibre gigabit, this shall do.So far, I can't fault this media converter. It even worked with a RJ45 SFP adapter, albeit that was for testing purposes as something acting as a two port switch is kinda silly.

Feels robust and works....

This product deserves 5 stars as it does exactly what was advertised, that is converts a 100Mbit/s SC-multi fibre input to a 100Mbit/s output port compatible with an RJ45 connector. The product is robust and neatly designed. There are a few switches on the back allowing auto-negotiation to be turned on/off and then 10Mbit/s or 100Mbit/s mode to be manually selected. The manual which was succinct and easy to understand (and completely unnecessary) recommended just leaving these in the 'all-up' default position. There are some lights on the front which may tell something meaningful if the device stops working properly at some point, but at the moment they just make my server cupboard look exciting. The price for this device is definitely competitive. I can't imagine what the more expensive devices with the same spec. actually do to warrant the cost - I can only postulate it's a reliability issue. So if this device breaks I'll modify this review - otherwise assume that this is a very highly recommended product.

Works really well.

Does the job perfectly, converting 1000BASE-SX fibre into 1000BASE-T gigabit Ethernet. It doesn't come with the SFP transceiver required for this so you'll need to get your own (this is the Full Duplex model) but yeah, it works great. Built solidly.

Inexpensive media converter chassis but note speed limitation

Purchased as part of project to give Gb connectivity to remote building 40 m from house using multimode fibre allowing me to mirror remote server with one in house, unfortunately due to various family matters etc abandoned for over 3 yrs but now want to have IP phone in building together with aforementioned server(s) - eventually.Hooking up entire system on bench, fibres and media converters noticed that the MC220L will NOT negotiate with a 10/100 Mb interface port such as the Yealink T21P E2 phone uses (another Yealink the T23G I have is Gb although I did not test this). Fortunately I had as part of my original project purchased a TP-Link SG2216 16 port switch which has 2 SFP combo slots for the laser modules - was going to use at the house end originally, this worked with the Yealink OK. I did read about the problem with connecting only to a Gb port somewhere else, I did try another TP-Link 10/100/1000 switch in between the unit and phone but this didn't work

great device, we use them a lot

Very simple to set up, very robust. We've used four of five of these things for a few years, transported them back and forth between countries, used them in dirty environments and all that. On one of them one link status LED broke after a few years (which doesn't prevent it from working), the others are fine. No complaints.

Does What It Should Just Gets Hot

Converts fibre to copper!I have one of these connecting to a HP switch with SFP slots. I am also using a HP transceiver with the TP-Link media converter.Works great and the link has not suffered any connectivity issues although these units do get very hot! Not that it affects use just something to note. Also you need to connect the Ethernet port to a gigabit compatible device / switch as it will only work at 1Gb
