Decently sized book and amazing!
The media could not be loaded. I’m using this with other supplementary resources on my phone to learn Japanese. There’s almost 400 pages of lessons, vocabulary, dialogues, grammar points, exercises to do by yourself of a friend, kanji learning, and more. There are two sections, conversation and grammar; reading and writing. You do not need to know hiragana to get this book since there is a section (reading and writing) that’ll walk you through it, but it’s always good to know ahead of time so you can just start at the beginning of the book. Right now I’m working on the grammar. Each lesson gives you a vocab sheet to study, conversations that will have some of the vocabulary included, and grammar lessons that had to do with the dialogue, as well as teaching new grammar points in the same lesson. There are two textbooks in total: Genki 1, and Genki 2. After that (what I really liked in the book cover) was them recommending what books to use next, once you’ve learned all the elementary Japanese elements. This is the newest edition which will explain what’s new/added, as well as a whole intro of how to use the textbook. You can also use the Genki 1 workbook to help reinforce what you’re leaning in this textbook. Seperate review for the workbook.

Popular for a reason
This is one of the most concise resources for learning Japanese. Grammar notes are intuitive, with examples for each topic. The vocabulary section is easy on the eyes, and is great for people like myself who prefer to study vocabulary in similar groups together at the same time. Also, the app paired with the text is easy to navigate, and the pronunciation is easy to follow for non-native speakers.I would recommend this resource for anyone interested in learning Japanese!

The most used in Japan
I started using Genki Volume 1 on the recommendation of my Japanese language teacher, who mentioned that this textbook is widely used in language schools across Japan. It’s easy to see why it’s so popular. The book is structured in a way that makes learning accessible and engaging, with clear explanations, practical examples, and a well-balanced approach to both grammar and vocabulary. Each chapter builds on the last, which has really helped me progress smoothly and confidently. I’ve found the exercises especially helpful in reinforcing key concepts and providing plenty of practice with real-world applications. This book has been a fantastic resource, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to build a strong foundation in Japanese.
