Q: how do i know if I need a transformer ?

Your simple push button doorbell will have a transformer somewhere, usually mounted to the side of an electrical junction box or the circuit breaker (or fuse) box, often in the basement. If you are installing a "Ring" doorbell, the system requires 30VA at 16V. You will need to track down your existing transformer and read the specifications, which are usually printed on it. If your transformer output is 30VA or more at 16V, you do not need to replace it. Older systems will have a transformer with only 10VA at 16V which will need to be replaced because it will not have enough power to run the new doorbell.

Q: Can I return after 30 days? I do not need the transformer.

Q: Can this transformer be installed in an attic?

I don’t see why not, as long as the wiring you need is there. Also, make sure to put it in an electrical box.

Q: Will it work with a digital chime?

If it need 16 Volts I’d say yes
